M91

Messier 91 (M91) is particularly interesting because it is classified as an anemic barred spiral galaxy, meaning it contains significantly less cold gas and forms new stars at a much slower rate than most spiral galaxies. Astronomers believe this is largely due to its environment within the Virgo Cluster, where interactions with the hot intracluster gas gradually strip away the material needed for star formation. As a result, M91 serves as an important example of how dense galaxy clusters can influence the evolution of their member galaxies over billions of years. Despite its reduced star-forming activity, the galaxy retains a striking central bar that channels gas toward its inner regions, affecting its overall structure and dynamics.
